Glen Johnson feels Callum Hudson-Odoi should leave Chelsea for Newcastle United
Former Chelsea right-back Glen Johnson has advised Callum Hudson-Odoi to leave Chelsea and join a team that could offer him regular first-team football. The 21-year-old has found himself in and out of the squad under Thomas Tuchel.
Hudson-Odoi was seen as an exciting prospect a few years back. The winger was seen as a potential future superstar. But the winger hasn’t been able to break into the team as of yet. The England international has been very inconsistent.
Johnson, speaking to BettingOdds (h/t Metro), feels Husdon-Odoi is a decent player with a lot to offer if he performs well. But the former Blue doesn’t see a future for the 21-year-old at Stamford Bridge.
“If he gets his head straight then I think he’s got a lot to offer but I think his days at Chelsea are over to be honest. He’s still young but for me he’s got a lot to learn.”
Hudson-Odoi has been in and around Chelsea’s senior squad since the 2018/19 season. The 21-year-old has featured in 126 games for the Blues. The youngster has been electrifying in some games but has never shown his quality consistently.
Fans have seen the talent within Hudson-Odoi, but he hasn’t been able to showcase it enough yet. Maybe the volatility of managers at the Bridge has affected the 21-year-old.
Johson feels a move away to a team where Hudson-Odoi plays more regularly might help him develop as a player, with Newcastle United being suggested. The former Chelsea ace feels the 21-year-old needs to be taken out of his “comfort zone”.
“He needs to play football every week so to go somewhere like Newcastle where he’s being taken out of his comfort zone to focus on his football. Maybe Newcastle will get the best out of him.”
Hudson-Odoi under Tuchel hasn’t been able to break into the first XI. The 21-year-old has been played in multiple positions by the German. Tuchel has even tried him as a wing-back.

There’s a lot of competition within the team in the attacking positions. Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount and now Raheem Sterling are all vying for a place in the starting lineup.
Hudson-Odoi has his work cut out at Chelsea. Tuchel doesn’t seem to fancy him. Fans feel a move away could be the thing the 21-year-old needs to kickstart his career.
