Transfer News: Chelsea eye Jurrien Timber as Jules Kounde alternative
According to Football.London, Chelsea have an alternative plan in mind in Ajax’s Jurrien Timber if they fail to land on preferred target Jules Kounde from Sevilla.
Chelsea have been keen on signing the French centre-back for quite some time now but they are ready to have a backup plan prepared in case something prevents them from signing the talented defender. The player in question is Jurrien Timber from Ajax.
The 20-year-old Dutch defender has played 43 times for Ajax this season scoring three goals and providing two assists across all competitions. Also capable of playing at right-back, Timber’s versatility is a huge plus for any team that desires to sign him next season.
Manchester United are said to be keen on signing the Ajax man this summer, with Erik Ten Hag keen on reuniting with the player at Old Trafford. However, with a move not materialising yet, Chelsea have kept tabs on the talented defender.
Solid option?
To say that Timber has been impressive at Ajax over the past few seasons would be an understatement. A product of Ajax’s famed academy, the 20-year-old has only grown from strength to strength.
Chelsea’s centre-back situation is well known and is not a very pleasant place to be in. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have left. The future of Cesar Azpilicueta is not known. This will leave the Blues extremely short of options in the centre of defence.
Whilst the evergreen Thiago Silva and impressive Trevoh Chalobah will remain here, they cannot do a job alone. The impressive Levi Colwill returning from his loan spell could be an option for Thomas Tuchel. Regardless, replacements are needed.
Jules Kounde is Chelsea’s primary target and they have wanted the Sevilla man for quite some time now. However, if they fail to land him due to some reasons, then Jurrien Timber will definitely be a solid choice for the Blues.
