Transfer News: Chelsea set to reignite interest in Chicago Fire goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina
According to Football.London, Chelsea are set to reignite their interest in talented American shot-stopper Gabriel Slonina after a deal for the Chicago Fire goalkeeper broke down due to the sanctions placed on the club by the UK Government.
The 18-year-old starlet is one of the most talented youngsters in the MLS and has made an exceptional start to life as a footballer. The teenager has played 24 times for the MLS club, conceding 33 goals and keeping nine clean sheets.
Despite having not made his debut for the national team yet, it may not be long before Slonina is handed a much-deserved senior cap for the USMNT. Anyone who has seen the 18-year-old play knows the potential the kid possesses and it comes as no surprise that he is already linked with a move away.
Chelsea’s attempts to sign the goalkeeping starlet reached a standstill when the club were placed on the sanctions list but the good news is that no other club has agreed to a deal with the player yet. Even with Bayern Munich said to be interested in Slonina, the Blues are set to revive their interest.
The future?
Gabriel Slonina has all the raw materials required to become a great goalkeeper in the Premier League and Chelsea must get a deal over the line as soon as possible. He could be the Blues’ future number one.
Eduardo Mendy is Chelsea’s first-choice shot-stopper and the Senegalese international is exceptional and will continue to be the number one for many years to come. However, the Blues do not have an able backup keeper with Kepa Arrizabalaga failing to convince.
Slonina is just 18 and could initially take over as a backup keeper at Stamford Bridge before taking over from Mendy somewhere down the line. If Thomas Tuchel feels however that the American is too young to be a backup, he could be loaned out to a Championship club for a couple of seasons.
Chelsea are in the midst of a takeover being completed and a new owner coming in means Chelsea will be free to complete signings they want to. The Blues have a lot of areas to invest in and a deal for Slonina must also be one that the new owners prioritise.
