Transfer News: Chelsea target’s father Josko Gvardiol holds meeting with Thomas Tuchel
According to 24Sata (h/t Football.London), the father of Chelsea target Josko Gvardiol has held talks with Blues manager Thomas Tuchel over a possible switch for RB Leipzig in the summer transfer window.
The former Dinamo Zagreb man joined RB Leipzig back in 2021 and has since gone on from strength to strength playing for the Bundesliga team. The Croatian centre-back has established himself as one of the pillars of the Leipzig defence.
The 20-year-old defender has played 46 times for the German outfit this season scoring two goals and providing three assists across all competitions. His versatility has been key to his success with the Croatian also capable of playing as a left-back.
The player has been identified as a top target for the Blues ahead of the transfer window and it seems like the player will also be keen on a move away from Leipzig. With initial talks being opened with the club over the possibility of a move, this could develop into something interesting.
Top signing?
Chelsea have a major rebuild awaiting them in defence come the summer transfer window. Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger are confirmed to leave the club whilst long-time club captain Cesar Azpilicueta is also said to be reconsidering his future.
This will leave us with just Thiago Silva and Trevoh Chalobah as options in central defence which does not inspire much confidence. We will undoubtedly have to dip in the transfer market vying for replacements if they are to remain competitive in the League next season.
In Gvardiol, we could be signing a player for the present and the future. The Croatian centre-back would fit in seamlessly at the left of the three centre-back positions in Thomas Tuchel’s system and could also provide cover at the left-back position if needed.
He is just 20-years-old and is far from the finished article and we will have to be patient with Gvardiol. The Premier League is a different ball game from the Bundesliga and as we have seen in the past with Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, there could be adaptation issues.
