Chelsea among clubs in the race to sign Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig
According to L’Equipe (h/t Mirror), Chelsea are in a race with Barcelona, Manchester United and Barcelona to sign young French attacker Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig for close to £100 million.
The former PSG youth star has been setting the stage alight in Bundesliga this season with impressive performances for the German outfit RB Leipzig. A versatile forward option who can play as a striker, false-9, attacking midfielder and even on the wings. The 24-year-old is undoubtedly one of the hottest prospects in town and clubs around Europe are vying for his signature.
The talented forward has scored an astonishing 34 goals and provided a further 20 assists in just 54 games for Leipzig this season. These kinds of numbers are not normal and Nkunku is truly a special talent. Despite otherworldly numbers, the Frenchman doesn’t seem to be talked about enough but that may not be the case for much longer.
Despite having a contract till 2024 and the club openly admitting that they have no intentions of selling Nkunku, it may not be long before the 24-year-old star makes his big move.
The Frenchman is said to be open to a move away from the German club and if that is indeed the case, there is no doubt that there will be several clubs queuing up to sign Nkunku. He will however not come cheap, with Leipzig expected to demand close to £100m to sell their prized asset.
Worth the price?
Chelsea are entering an era under new ownership and the signings they make will go a huge way in establishing trust among the Blues fan base.
Nkunku, at the quoted price, could just be the statement signing the new owners are looking to make. However, there is a fear that he could be a one-season wonder after all and there is no guarantee that he would continue in the same vein next season.
The Blues will want to be extremely careful and not repeat the same mistake they did with Timo Werner who was also signed from Leipzig after one extraordinary season for the Bundesliga club. Thus, they might want to be a bit more watchful with Nkunku.
If the current season’s statistics are anything to go by, then signing the French striker must be a no-brainer as players with such goal-scoring and creating quality don’t come along often. Thomas Tuchel will know how to get the best out of the player having already seen him during his time at PSG.

It will not be easy for Chelsea however, especially with so many other giants in the race. If the Blues manage to pull this off, however, it may turn out to be a very good signing for the club.
