Two of the remaining Chelsea bidders are interested in AS Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell
According to The Athletic (subscription required), two Chelsea bidders are interested in recruiting former Tottenham Hotspur sporting director Paul Mitchell. The 40-year-old currently holds the Sporting director’s role at AS Monaco, doing a commendable job with the French club.
With each passing day, the race for the purchase of the Blues becomes more and more intense. Consortiums led by Todd Boehly, Stephen Pagliuca, and Sir Martin Broughton still remain in the race after the Ricketts family-led group opted out of making a final bid for the West London club.
It is believed that our prospective owners have all expressed a desire to keep long-serving director Marina Granovskaia at the club. Filling the position of technical director is also a big part of their agenda, with Micthell being touted as an option to fill that role.
Paul Mitchell to Stamford Bridge
The manager and his immediate staff play an important role in creating a suitable DNA at the club. That being said, it is also important for the backroom staff to recruit the right kind of players. That is especially key at a top club like Chelsea, where you are expected to secure silverware every season.
We have in recent times seen the impact of Michael Edwards at Liverpool, helping pave the way for a squad that is currently challenging for titles in Europe as well as in England. Whilst Granovskaia herself has done an impressive job at Stamford Bridge, the addition of someone like Paul Mitchell would only strengthen our hand.
His experience in the Premier League with clubs like Southampton and Spurs could be a great asset. The 40-year-old director has also held positions at RB Leipzig and MK Dons and joined The Monégasques in June 2020. It would be interesting to see what is made of these developments once our new owners are confirmed.

Under Roman Abramovich, we have won 5 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cup titles, 3 League Cups, 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, 2 UEFA Europa Leagues, 2 Community Shield titles, 1 UEFA Super Cup, and 1 FIFA Club World Cup. It is hence fair to say that this has set a great precedent for our future owners as to what is expected from them in terms of silverware and glory.
This is a great yardstick to measure the effectiveness of the new ownership. Under the Russian Oligarch, the Stamford Bridge outfit also managed to create one of the most lucrative youth systems in England producing talent on a regular basis. Keeping up with these achievements isn’t an easy task but being linked to Paul Mitchell certainly seems like a step in the right direction.
