Chelsea handed a stinging double blow in the race to sign Bayern Munich stalwart Serge Gnabry
According to Tobi Altschäffl via iMiaSanMia on Twitter (h/t The Sun), David Alaba is trying to lure former teammate Serge Gnabry to Real Madrid amidst interest from Chelsea. The Blues have received another blow in this pursuit as the 26-year-old is prioritising a contract extension with Bayern Munich.
Whilst the contact between Los Blancos and Gnabry is only loose at this moment, the West Londoners are joined by the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Barcelona in the race to sign the 26-year-old attacker.
His current deal with the Bavarians ends in 2023 but it seems as though the former Arsenal man is focused on getting his contract extended at the Allianz Arena. This could be a potent blow for the Stamford Bridge outfit who could have done with an upcoming talent like the German international.
Serge Gnabry has netted 13 goals and bagged nine assists in 36 matches across all competitions for Die Roten this campaign. Predominantly a right-winger by trade, the 26-year-old can be used on the left flank as well as in the middle of the park should the need arise. This kind of versatility could be a great asset for any manager to have.
What the future holds for Gnabry?
Whilst the German international has shown great promise in the Bundesliga, the Premier League can be a whole different level when it comes to the intense and demanding style of play that is frequented in England. Adapting to it is a task that is easier said than done.
Even though Kai Havertz is slowly starting to become a dependable option for the Blues up front, Timo Werner who was considered a potential world-beater during his time in the Bundesliga is now struggling to make his mark at Stamford Bridge and is already being linked with a move away from the club.
One must therefore be wise and make any decision should a lucrative deal provide itself to the London-based club. At this moment any solid move for the former West Brom man sounds like a difficult proposition considering his eagerness to sign an extension along with David Alaba’s effort in trying to lure him to Santiago Bernabeu.
Not to mention that a host of top Premier League clubs could be ready to pounce at the first sign of a possible dream. Whilst there are many obstacles in the path it is certainly not impossible and the Blues have been known for their ability to lure talented attackers in the past.
