Romelu Lukaku turned down larger offer from Manchester City before joining Chelsea
Romelu Lukaku had disclosed that he had rejected a massive offer from Manchester City before he had joined Chelsea. It took place a year before he had returned to Stamford Bridge from Inter Milan for a transfer fee of £98million. It was the same interview where he revealed that he was “unhappy” with his situation at the club.
The Belgian’s current salary package earns him £212,000-a-week with the Blues, which is a huge deal in itself. He moved to the West London club this season after Inter had allowed him to leave the club to meet their financial difficulties.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Italia via FC Inter News (h/t Daily Mail Online), Lukaku mentioned how he could have earned a bigger pay cut if he had accepted the offer from Man City. He added that it was not the right time to leave elsewhere as the Serie A club had helped him in a tough situation at Manchester United.
“After the first year, I turned down an offer from Manchester City that was higher than Chelsea’s current one, because I didn’t want to (move). It was not the time, it was the first year and I wanted to do something good for Inter because they saved my career. I was in a tunnel at Manchester United. I was a big investment for Inter and we did great things together.”
Why? Just why?
The 28-year-old’s words may not be concerning in itself, and his intentions are reasonable and honest based on this alone. But as you all know by now, the entire interview has put him in a bad light, which has resulted in unwanted baggage within the club.
We are going through a difficult phase currently and, we needed everyone to work together to get us out of the plight. It has created a situation where we have to manage this uncertainty as it could potentially break the harmony within the squad.

Thomas Tuchel said that a meeting is set to take place regarding the issue, and we hope that the matter is resolved as soon as possible. Looking at it from the striker’s perspective, it seems that he wanted to explain his side for the way he left to the Nerazzurri fans.
But what the Belgian attacker failed to understand is how he is at Chelsea, and his words would leave a sour taste with the Blues supporters. Let’s hope that the issue is put to bed as soon as possible as we have more important matters to focus on currently.
