Wolves boss Bruno Lage claims Chelsea are one of the best in the world despite stuttering form
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, as quoted by Wolves.co.uk, Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Bruno Lage has claimed that Chelsea are one of the best teams in the world despite a recent blip in form.
The Midlands club are set to take on the Blues on Sunday afternoon. The Molineux outfit have produced encouraging performances in recent weeks. They almost got the better of Liverpool and Man City as they were narrowly beaten in both matches.
Their hard work finally paid off in mid-week against Brighton. However, they shall now face one of the top teams in the Premier League and the reigning European champions. But Chelsea have only picked up 2 victories out of their last six games across all competitions.
Regardless, Bruno Lage is wary of the threat of their opponents on the weekend. He claimed that the men in blue are one of the best teams in the world and they do not have bad moments.
“These types of teams, they don’t have bad moments. They have big players and are one of the best teams in the world. They won the last Champions League…The manager has a lot of experience. He can replace several players because they have a good squad. And they do very well in his system, so they are very hard guys to play against, and they dominate their system.
“We played Liverpool, after that Manchester City, then we went to Brighton, and it was a big challenge against [Graham] Potter and his players, now come Chelsea, another big challenge for us. It’s an opportunity for us.”
Downplaying the truth?
Lage may have a point, but we have been experiencing quite a dip in form. Our defensive unit was the best in England until the end of November, and things have taken a turn for the worse since then. In the last six games, we have conceded 11 goals. To put this into perspective, we conceded only four in the league in the opening three months.
Moreover, our attack has been horribly misfiring. Mason Mount scored in the fourth straight league game in mid-week, and even that was not enough to seal the game. Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic, and Reece James missed a chance in the opening 15 minutes against Everton.
This is pretty unacceptable, especially when we were already 2 points off the top of the table. There is a gap in quality between the title-chasing pack and us. Of course, we are not all too far behind, but Wolves appear to be a stronger side than Everton, at least that is what the league table indicates.

Lage also admitted that it is an opportunity for them to overcome the challenge on Sunday. Given that Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Jorginho, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek might be unavailable, Wolves have more than a chance to beat us. Nevertheless, we have enough in the ranks, but our current form has not put a lot of belief in our supporters, courtesy of which the weekend fixture is highly unpredictable.
