Chelsea in pole position to sign 24-year-old Serie A defender in January

Chelsea are pushing for the signature of Torino defender, Gleison Bremer.

Transfer News: Chelsea could sign Torino star Gleison Bremer in January

According to transfer news on Tuttosport (h/t The Metro), Chelsea are in pole position to sign Gleison Bremer from Torino and could seal a deal in January.

The 24-year-old has impressed at the Italian club as he helped them narrowly avoid relegation last season. However, the defender could be planning to leave now, with his contract set to expire in 2023.

The Serie A outfit is finding it hard to tie him down to a new deal. And a move to England is thought to be imminent. Chelsea are apparently in pole position to land the signature of the Brazilian international.

The Blues could also complete a move for him in January itself. The club’s interest in signing another defender is understandable, given the current contract situation of Thiago SilvaCesar AzpilicuetaAntonio Rudiger, and Andreas Christensen. However, West Brom and Tottenham Hotspur are also tracking the Torino ace.

Out with the old, in with the new?

Although Marina Granovskaia could still convince one of the four out-of-contract defenders to pen a new deal, there is the chance that some of them could leave. Antonio Rudiger looks the likeliest to leave, with Real Madrid keen on signing the German international and Chelsea reluctant on satisfying his wage demands.

Thus, in such a scenario, signing Bremer would be a smart decision. It is important for a team like Chelsea to infuse depth into their defence considering they play with three centre-backs in their starting lineup under Tuchel.

Moreover, he is of a good age profile and could comfortably learn on the job. Silva and Azpilicueta aren’t getting any younger and we did lose Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi this summer. Thus, signing a centre-back seems like a smart thing to do, especially keeping our future in mind.

The Blues, however, need to be quick and decisive with their interest since other English clubs are also interested in the centre-back. The West London club could use a fresh face in January to avoid increasing the gap with the title-chasing pack.
