Beppe Bergomi reveals that Simone Inzaghi tried to convince Chelsea ace Romelu Lukaku to stay at Inter Milan
Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, as quoted by Inter-news.it (h/t football.london), Beppe Bergomi revealed that Simone Inzaghi did everything to convince Chelsea ace Romelu Lukaku to stay at Inter Milan this season.
The 28-year-old re-signed for the Blues this season in a mammoth €115million move. However, his importance to Inter was perhaps far greater. The Nerazzurri won the Serie A title last season but are 3rd this season, trailing to Napoli and rivals AC Milan.
In the two years that Lukaku was at the San Siro, he scored 64 goals and provided 16 assists in 95 appearances. However, after Antonio Conte left them at the start of the season, they appointed Simone Inzaghi. The Italian was apparently determined on keeping the Belgian international at the club.
Club legend Beppe Bergomi recently revealed that Inzaghi did everything to convince the striker, but he wanted to re-sign for his former club.
“Inter are playing well regardless of who goes on the pitch, I have never had doubts about Simone Inzaghi.
“However, I have doubts about Romelu Lukaku [sale] because I thought he was an essential player for Inter. I spoke to Inzaghi, he told me that he had tried everything to convince him to stay, but then he understood that it was impossible.”
A win for us
Regardless of how Inter fans felt about the move, the West London club put their money where their mouth is to bring the centre-forward back to Stamford Bridge. He had unfinished business from the last time around, and he is here to right the wrongs.
He did not take too long to get going either, as he scored four goals in his first four games. Although he did go goalless for seven games after that, his contribution has been valuable. Timo Werner looks much more comfortable on the pitch with a strike partner, while Mason Mount and Kai Havertz were also functioning quite well alongside the Belgian.
He picked up an injury in October, that kept him out for a month. However, he is back now, and his importance could be seen in the game against Watford. He held the ball and brought others into the game and was vital in creating the winner for Hakim Ziyech.

Lukaku is yet to get going and could prove to be vital for us in the title race. He helped Inter lift the league title after 10 years last season. And he might just guide us to our first league trophy after half a decade.
