Fabrizio Romano sheds light on 25-year-old star’s contract standstill with Chelsea

Fabrizio Romano reveals Chelsea want Andreas Christensen to sign a new contract immediately

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea want Andreas Christensen to sign a new contract right now after failing to sign the extension offer three months ago.

From the outside looking in, it all looks a little wayward. The academy graduate has been incredible under Thomas Tuchel in the past year and has cemented his place in the squad. His importance was on show in the Watford game, as the Dane helped the club secure a hard-fought victory. While he is committed to the job at hand. However, his contract is up in the summer.

The 25-year-old was set to sign an extension three months ago, but an ‘agent’s story’ apparently changed the timing. This led to Barcelona showing interest in the player. But it is understood that Christensen wants to stay at Chelsea, and he has made that vocally clear to the club.

However, the Blues are taking the rough road and demanding him to sign a new deal immediately rather than procrastinating. Thomas Tuchel also recently revealed that the club wants confirmation and commitment from the defender, and it is up to him to make a decision on his future.

Chelsea are right in their stance

The centre-back is a critical cog in the side. However, he is not bigger than the club, and the Blues shall not be played with or held to ransom. There is thankfully a willingness from either end to commit to a new deal.

It should not be more complicated than that. If it is a matter concerning the wages or the number of years on the new contract, it needs to be made clear during negotiations, not when the offer is drafted and presented.

There is a certain level of professionalism expected at this level from every player. If Chelsea were forcing him to sign a deal that did not satisfy his demands, he is within his rights to reject it. But changing the goalposts at the last minute is perhaps unacceptable.

Regardless, the depth of the situation is unknown, nor is its veracity clear. It could very well be a miscommunication or a misunderstanding. Tuchel dropped the player for three straight games before fielding him against Watford. It could be a message, or it might not be one, but something is certainly brewing behind the scenes and it needs to be taken care of soon.
