Chelsea become the latest club to join Nikola Milenkovic transfer race

A report by Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb (h/t football.london) mentions that Chelsea have joined two other Premier League clubs in the transfer race for Fiorentina defender, Nikola Milenkovic.

Manchester United and Liverpool have been linked with a move for Milenkovic for months now. But Chelsea are the latest addition in the list of suitors for him.

His contract at the Serie A clubs expires in the summer of 2022, which means he could be a free agent by the time the 2022 summer transfer window arrives. And Fiorentina would obviously want to avoid this.

This is why they could be open to parting ways with the Serbian international this summer itself. Any Chelsea move for the 23-year-old, however, rests on one Chelsea loanee.

Race for Milenkovic

The report mentions that Thomas Tuchel will pursue Milenkovic if Fikayo Tomori, who is on loan at AC Milan, does not return to Stamford Bridge at the end of this season. (h/t football.london)

If he does make his way back to Chelsea, then the Blues would supposedly be content with their defensive line-up. The 23-year-old seems like a defender worth pursuing for Chelsea.

He is an immovable part of the La Viola line-up this season where he has made 27 Serie A appearances, even grabbing 3 goals and an assist in that time. (h/t transfermarkt)

The Blues look set to make the UEFA Champions League top 4 at the end of this season. The race is tight, but if they do manage to secure that spot, they would undoubtedly become more attractive destinations for players like Milenkovic.

And to add to that, Thiago Silva’s future at the club stays unresolved. He signed on a free transfer from PSG last summer on a one-year deal, and if he does leave, then Milenkovic can be a very good long-term replacement for him.
