Transfer News: Chelsea to battle Tottenham for the signing of Gabriel Menino

According to transfer news from Express, Chelsea are all set to battle Tottenham for the signature of Gabriel Menino. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has spoken about the player and Chelsea have been linked with a €20m move for him.

Gabriel Menino is a 20-year-old Brazilian central midfielder who is a youth product of Palmeiras. He joined the youth setup in 2017 and over the years, progressed to the first-team. Last year, he made his debut for the first-team against Ituano. So far, he has made 59 appearances for the Brazilian side, scoring 4 and assisting 7.

21th January 2021 Man& xe9 Garrincha Stadium, Brasilia, Brazil Brazilian Serie A, Flamengo versus Palmeiras Mauricio Isla of Flamengo and Gabriel Menino of Palmeiras challenge for the loose ball.

One striking fact about the Brazilian is his versatility. Even though the 20-year-old is a central midfielder, he can play at right-back, right midfield, right-wing, defensive midfield, as well as in central attacking midfield. It has been stated that the player idolises former Barcelona star Dani Alves.

Chelsea does look a bit stocked in midfield and defence, with the likes of Kante, Jorginho and Kovacic manning the midfield. The likes of Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi have been playing at right wing-back. Romano claimed that he is a new name on the radar of several clubs including Chelsea.

Gabriel Menino of Palmeiras celebrates after scoring during the Copa Libertadores quarter final soccer match between Palmeiras and Libertad at Allianz Parque stadium in Sao Paulo, Brazil, 15 December 2020.

“Yes, a new name for European football, for Chelsea and other clubs that are looking at him. We are talking about scouting, so no negotiation at the moment. The fee would be around €20m (£17.2m).”

Nonetheless, the 20-year-old Menino could be a handy player for the Blues given the versatile nature and adaptability that he would bring to the table.

Chelsea could actually use an out-and-out right wing-back or midfielder and Menino could be a good choice in the future. However, interest from other clubs such as Spurs could make things competitive.
