Chelsea receive a blow in pursuit of Gianluigi Donnarumma

According to Tutto Mercato (h/t Football.london), Chelsea have hit a stumble in their pursuit of Gianluigi Donnarumma. It has been said that Ligue 1 side, PSG are in pole position to land the player who is yet to sign a new deal with AC Milan.

It could be the case that he eventually signs a new contract but the fact that it has dragged on for this long with just a few months left, means that sides like PSG and Chelsea are on the edge and waiting to snap him up. It has been said that contract talks between the player and club have stalled in recent weeks and both sides are contemplating a move.

It has been said that a new contract could have been agreed if Milan allowed a buyout clause to be inserted in his contract. However, PSG now hold a good bit of leeway in the race to sign the promising young keeper.

Chelsea could look to sign the keeper despite needing players in other positions such as centre-back and striker. Another big question would be the future of Kepa Arrizabalaga if Donnarumma arrives. Chelsea have thrown big money on keepers in the last few seasons with Kepa and Edouard Mendy arriving at the Bridge.

While Mendy is the first-choice, for now, a move for Donnarumma would make him the first choice for the next 8-10 years. However, a lot will depend on what happens between now and the end of the season. Chelsea could try and pip PSG to his signature.
