Jamie Carragher speaks in support of Chelsea youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi
Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher went on to rebuke Thomas Tuchel’s decision to sub on and sub off Callum Hudson-Odoi in the Southampton game (h/t Express). Carragher defended Hudson-Odoi over Tuchel’s treatment of him.
The England forward was brought on at half-time in the Southampton game only to be taken off after 31 minutes of action. The dropped points in that game meant that Chelsea slipped out of the top four after making a surge in recent weeks.
Thomas Tuchel explained his decision to haul off the forward, saying that he was not happy with Hudson-Odoi’s effort and attitude. However, Carragher went on to defend the starlet.
“A manager is paid to make decisions and get results. If [Tuchel] felt making that change gave them more chance of winning the game and helping Chelsea get in the Champions League then I have absolutely no problem with it. Hudson-Odoi lost the ball seven times in the game and had it 18, so that may have been a problem for the manager.
“But the two times he lost it poorly, he was sprinting after the ball. When the manager says he’s wasn’t happy with his counter-pressing… I can’t really see too much of a problem. Timo Werner was the only player who made more sprints than Callum Hudson-Odoi in that period.”

Carragher went on to say that it was not right to bring him off. While a manager may see one thing and act on that but it was harsh to bring him off. Finally, he felt that this would send a message to everyone that they have to impact the game after coming on as a sub.
