Tony Cascarino believes Chelsea will not back Frank Lampard in the January transfer window

Speaking on talkSport (h/t Express), former Chelsea star Tony Cascarino does not believe the club will back Frank Lampard in the January transfer window.

The boss has come under severe pressure following a run of just two wins in eight Premier League games. This has seen us go from the top to eighth in the standings.

Lampard showed excellent leadership and acumen to guide a young Chelsea side to the fourth spot. Despite spending around £220m in the summer, he has failed to take us up a notch.

“It never goes down well when you spend loads of money on signings who don’t work out or are not playing well.”

“Upstairs will go, ‘we’ll give him more money and spend again’, but they get a little bit nervous and edgy about doing that.”

Cascarino believes Lampard has already been afforded more time than any other manager in his situation would have. Given Roman Abramovich’s track record, it is hard to argue with the point.

Chelsea faces Luton Town in the FA Cup before welcoming Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley to the Bridge in the league. With all three games set to be played at home, Lampard will have no excuses if results go sideways.

Lampard is expected to be given three games to prove he can turn around our fortunes. Time, it would seem, does not wait for anyone at the Bridge, not even a club legend.

“If he’s going to make the end of the season he has to go on a run of winning games now.”

Need for a long term vision!

Chelsea’s reluctance to spend is understandable given the uncertainty around Lampard’s future. The last thing we would want is to go big and then be forced to bring in another manager.

Liverpool made the exact same mistake in 2015. Brendan Rodgers splashed the cash on Christian Benteke only to be dismissed midway through the season. The Belgian striker never was in Jurgen Klopp’s plans and was swiftly sold.

The Blues have made a number of splashes in recent windows. Kepa Arrizabalaga, Kai Havertz, and Timo Werner all came for big money. The prospect of another big window with the managerial spot far from secure would be foolhardy.

The onus now is on Lampard to ensure he gets the best out of the resources already available at the club.
