Marcel Desailly believes Olivier Giroud is not the future for Chelsea
Speaking to Goal (h/t Mirror), Chelsea icon Marcel Desailly said that Olivier Giroud can never be the “main man” at Chelsea.
Olivier Giroud has had to fight for game-time this season after being 3rd in line behind Tammy Abraham and new signing Timo Werner.
However, he has been getting more starts recently due to his excellent form. Giroud scored 10 goals last season and has managed to score 8 already this term.
After scoring 4 goals against Sevilla, Frank Lampard has afforded more minutes to Giroud. The Frenchman has started in Chelsea’s last 3 Premier League games.
Despite scoring twice in his last 3 league starts, Giroud’s compatriot Marcel Desailly believes that the French striker cannot be Chelsea’s main man. The former Chelsea defender believes that Giroud is not the future of the club.
“He is not the future of Chelsea and he can never be the main man.”
The competition up front for Chelsea and Giroud being 34 years old is the main reason behind Desailly’s comments.
Desailly still holds Giroud in high regards and says that Frank Lampard should know when and where to use Giroud.
He says that Lampard needs to study his opponents and use the 34-year-old FIFA World Cup winner’s strengths accordingly.
“It is just down to Lampard to use him at the right time, get runners around him to allow him to shine. With his age and status as world champion, then this is about how and when you use him.”
Giroud was linked with a Chelsea exit in the summer, and the rumours have surfaced again ahead of the January window. (h/t Mirror)
The former Arsenal striker is now getting more minutes under his belt though. 4 of his 5 Chelsea starts this season have come in December since his heroics against Sevilla in Europe.
