On 15th March, Sao Paulo FC of Brazil announced that a young, attack minded midfielder would join Chelsea for around £5m; a fee that could rise to £10m depending on clauses. After beating Italian giants Juventus to Piazon’s signature, what are the Blues getting for their money?
Born in Coritiba, Brazil, Piazon moved to Sao Paulo at the age of 12 following a successful spell at Atletico Paranaense. Although he didn’t feature in their first team, Lucas was regarded as the next Kaka for his passing and reading of the game – so, all smiles at the moment.
Piazon has made a number of appearances for Brazil’s under-15 squad, where he has a superb record of 11 goals in seven games and ended up being top scorer in the South American Under-15 Football Championship.
In addition, this year the 5ft 11inch star moved up the next tear to Brazil’s under 17’s squad, where he featured on the score sheet in the 2011 Fifa U-17’s World Cup; ending up with a current record of four goals in 13 appearances.
The 17-year-old will officially move to Stamford Bridge on 20th January – his birthday – after successfully passing his medical. And it looks as though Chelsea have captured a real gem of a player and a potential replacement for Frank Lampard in the long term? All be it, I look forward to watching him perform in the Premier League and live up to his natives’ comparison.
