Chelsea FC: Anyone for Piazon?

published :

On 15th March, Sao Paulo FC of Brazil announced that a young, attack minded midfielder would join Chelsea for around £5m; a fee that could rise to £10m depending on clauses. After beating Italian giants Juventus to Piazon’s signature, what are the Blues getting for their money?

Born in Coritiba, Brazil, Piazon moved to Sao Paulo at the age of 12 following a successful spell at Atletico Paranaense. Although he didn’t feature in their first team, Lucas was regarded as the next Kaka for his passing and reading of the game – so, all smiles at the moment.

Piazon has made a number of appearances for Brazil’s under-15 squad, where he has a superb record of 11 goals in seven games and ended up being top scorer in the South American Under-15 Football Championship.

In addition, this year the 5ft 11inch star moved up the next tear to Brazil’s under 17’s squad, where he featured on the score sheet in the 2011 Fifa U-17’s World Cup; ending up with a current record of four goals in 13 appearances.

The 17-year-old will officially move to Stamford Bridge on 20th January – his birthday – after successfully passing his medical. And it looks as though Chelsea have captured a real gem of a player and a potential replacement for Frank Lampard in the long term? All be it, I look forward to watching him perform in the Premier League and live up to his natives’ comparison.

Chelsea youth verses Chelsea experience: McEachran, Sturridge and Van Aanholt are the only youngsters that are ready for regular first team involvement. But even they need to be brought in cautiously. It will be a mistake to rely on the slow and experienced players just as it will be to rely on the agile and inexperienced ones. Chelsea must bring in a few young players who are ready-made, as they did with Ramires and David Luiz. Modric is such a player, but one or two more are needed. Real wingers are missing, and Chelsea’s right back position (Bosingwa/Ferriera) remains our weakest area. I agree that a complete team overhaul is unnecessary, but I think the ones I have labelled are important if Chelsea hope to deal with the likes of Man Utd and Barcelona.

Piazon is a gamble that may or may not come off depending on his development. Chelsea wont know that for at least two and maybe three years after his arrival. Josh MacEachran is way ahead of him in development and experience terms. Ryan Bertrand is also a great current prospect for us and who has had a very good pre season tour. Both he and Pat Van Aanholt are ready made back ups for Ashley and the left back slot. It will be interesting to see who AVB retains and who either gets sold or loaned out for next term. Personally I wasn't over impressed with Slobodan Rajkovic on our Asian tour and with his continued work permit problems can see him being sold before the end of this window. Young Nathanial Chilobah looks a tremedous prospect and is obviously a favourite of AVB's. He can play at Centre Back or right back equally well and I think he may even make the first team squad this season. This coming season Chelsea fans can look forward to a mixture of youth and experience with the youth players given a far greater chance of actually playing than under recent previous Managers such as Carlo. We still desperately need a top class midfield maestro playmaker and a true attacking winger though or I can't see us beating either City or United to the title. Let us all hope we get these players in before the summer window closes. I just wish some fans would get off of Paulo Farriera's back. The guy had some blinding displays in Asia for us and is solid back up for the right back slot. AVB his fellow countryman has him playing really well and he will definately be in our squad for next season. Non moaning and experienced utility players like Paulo can make all the difference to a squad especially one trying to bring inexperienced players into the Premiership.

Mate, Paizon is a forward. Not a midfielder. Thats a primary thing you must know. Definitely not replacing lampsy but it is a great buy!!
