Cucurella compares Chelsea and Spain dressing rooms
Chelsea have endured a very busy summer yet again as their squad strength at one point grew to over 40 players, thanks to Todd Boehly buying irresistibly without really getting rid of the deadweight. It has required Enzo Maresca’s intervention to discount some players out of his plans and yet, the Blues continue to have an unnecessary amount of players in the team.
In a recent interview via Football London, Marc Cucurella has hinted at the atmosphere in the team’s dressing room as he compared it with the Spanish national sides. He said:
“It is true that it is difficult (establishing squad harmony), here [with Spain] everything is much easier to generate a good atmosphere. At Chelsea I try, but it is a time of change in which many players leave, and others come. I try to give my best. One of the keys to success in the Euros was the good group we had. In these tournaments you are together all day, we have to put up with each other and if we hadn’t gotten along, it would have been complicated. I try there, it comes naturally to me to create a good environment.”
“I’m happy, I think the coach we have is very good, he has very clear ideas. We come from years of changing coaches, let’s see if we can gain stability without many changes and that the coach can transmit his ideas. We need stability, we have high-level players, and I hope we can have that patience that is needed, that calm, so that everything goes well. We have the level, we just need stability and letting the coaches and players work to do something important.”
It goes without saying that things at the club could be done better with regards to the first team. Chelsea’s rigorous transfer business is bound to have brought about a bout of insecurity among the players, especially with the scathing assessments Enzo Maresca gave of Ben Chilwell and Raheem Sterling towards the end of the transfer window when the duo was not a part of his plans.
Moreover, the club has also made a number of unnecessary signings with the offensive out-wide positions being the best examples. The likes of Joao Felix and Pedro Neto were added to a team which already boasts the likes of Mykhaylo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Christopher Nkunku, while the likes of Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson can also de deployed on the flanks.
And barring a 6-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, Chelsea’s results have not exponentially changed under Maresca as opposed to what Mauricio Pochettino would yield. It remains to be seen how much longer the Italian takes to find a winning formula, but keeping in mind Chelsea’s hire-and-fire policy, he will need to start winning points sooner rather than later.

Chelsea visit Bournemouth on matchday four after the international break and get the league phase of their UEFA Conference League season underway just a few days thereafter. It will be interesting to see how much more the team has developed over a fortnight of no match action and whether Cucurella’s comments hinting at a lack of squad harmony hold true in the grand scheme of things.
