When Chelsea took on Manchester City in their opening Premier League match of the campaign, Enzo Maresca decided to leave a few players out of his squad with Raheem Sterling being one of them. In the aftermath of his side’s defeat, the Italian called it a ‘technical decision’ while the forward’s entourage also released a statement reaffirming the Englishman’s commitment to the Blues.
However, he has been linked with departing Stamford Bridge for all of the summer and Maresca’s exclusion of Sterling was interpreted by many as a sign of the manager not counting on him for 2024/25.
Express has reported that Newcastle United are keeping an eye on his situation in west London and it is not ruled out that they prepare a move for Sterling before the end of the transfer window. The 29-year-old’s stance on joining the Magpies is yet to be clarified, as is the price they are willing to pay for the Chelsea ace.
There is also no news as to whether Maresca has communicated a decision about his plans to Sterling and his entourage. The new Chelsea boss asked Ben Chilwell to leave the club in his post-match interview after the Manchester City loss but has yet to offer any concrete comment on what he has in store for the former Liverpool forward.
Sterling turned down an offer from Saudi Arabia earlier in the summer as he was determined to succeed at Chelsea but if his exclusions from the squad continue, he may welcome the possibility of reigniting his career elsewhere.
Newcastle United would be able to offer him a promising sporting project as well as match his high wage demands. Eddie Howe’s team has some of the Premier League’s best players and Sterling’s addition to a squad that is chasing a European spot could work tremendously in favour of either party.
The Magpies, however, have yet to formally declare interest in Sterling’s arrival from Chelsea. However, should they do so, the completion of his transfer may only be a matter of time.
