Real Madrid will approach Chelsea for 29-year-old if Andriy Lunin leaves the club

Real Madrid to move for Kepa Arrizabalaga if Andriy Lunin leaves

According to Spanish news outlet Marca, Andriy Lunin’s future at Real Madrid remains unclear, and if he were to leave this summer, Los Blancos would like to bring back Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea—this time permanently.

A near-season-long injury sustained by Thibaut Courtois at the start of last season had prompted Real Madrid to make a loan move for Kepa, whose own near-month-long injury in November opened up the path to the first team for Lunin.

Lunin duly took up the responsibility and went on to become a key component of Carlo Ancelotti’s side that went on to win both LaLiga and the Champions League.

However, Lunin was dropped by Ancelotti in favour of the returning Courtois for the Champions League final and was rewarded for his call as his side won a record fifteenth European title. This, however, also ensured the Ukraine international that he would remain second-favourite at best at the Bernabéu going forward.

With Lunin’s €2.81m-per-year contract expiring at the end of this season, Real Madrid only have this summer to earn a profit off his sale, and should they manage that, they’re likely to find it easy to reach an agreement with Chelsea for a permanent sale of Kepa, still the most expensive goalkeeper of all time, whose £7.8m-per-year contract at Stamford Bridge also ends after this season.

Chelsea themselves have been linked with a move for Lunin, so a straight swap deal is also on the cards.

A very likely transfer

The situation here is not complicated and a solution can be reached that suits all parties.

Lunin wants to be a first-choice goalkeeper. Chelsea want a long-term first-choice goalkeeper, want to get Kepa off their books, and Real Madrid want Kepa as their second-choice goalkeeper.

Lunin goes to Chelsea, Kepa goes back to Madrid. Everybody wins. The sooner the two clubs can reach upon this agreement, the better.
