A View From The Bridge

La Liga club respond to Chelsea’s audacious £42m bid for 20-year-old breakthrough star

Chelsea’s big money bid rejected for Atletico Madrid starlet Samu Omorodion

Chelsea have expressed interest in Spanish striker Samu Omorodion for a transfer this summer, and they reciprocated their interest with a £42 million bid to sign the 20-year-old forward from Atletico Madrid. Per a recent report via. The Metro, the Madrid giants, have rejected Chelsea’s proposal to sell Omorodion.

The 20-year-old has become a prime target for the Granada academy after the West Londoners missed out on their striking prime target, RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. Chelsea’s new gaffer, Enzo Maresca, is looking to upgrade his offensive options in the ongoing summer transfer window following Nicolas Jackson’s mixed premier campaign at Stamford Bridge. Jackson has netted 17 goals in all competitions, though he could have scored many more if he took over the chances presented to him. He has faced criticism for his recklessness in front of goal.

Blues must up-offer

Atletico Madrid young gun Omorodion is out of Chelsea’s reach (for now)

Atletico Madrid signed Omorodion last summer from Granada and sent him on loan to Alaves for the 2023–24 season. The 20-year-old scored eight goals in 34 appearances in the Spanish top tier; however, he impressed his parent club enough to recall him midway through the season. The Spanish giants are under no financial pressure to sell the 20-year-old and have knocked Chelsea’s £42 million bid back.

The Blues will have to drastically improve their offer for the Spain U21 international to bring Omorodion to Stamford Bridge. They will likely have to meet their £70 million valuation to convince Atleti to part ways with the talented young striker. Atletico manager Diego Simeone acknowledged in an interview last October that Omorodion has the potential to develop into an ‘important player’ for the La Liga giants.

‘You can see him evolving in the games we’ve followed involving Alaves. He’s a young guy, strong, with a lot of speed in long spaces, and very good at playing in the box with his body. Let’s hope he does well at Alaves, because he has a future with Atletico. He spent only a few days with us, but he looks humble and hardworking. He will be an important player.’

For now, it looks like Omorodion will travel to Paris for the Olympics before he returns to the Spanish capital and looks to break into Simeone’s first team. We will see if there will be any further developments in Chelsea’s pursuit of him this summer.
