Journos downplay Chelsea pursuit of Champions League hero as Kepa eyes Saudi switch

Matt Law and Fabrizio Romano provide updates on the future of Andriy Lunin

As reported by Football London, renowned journalists Matt Law and Fabrizio Romano have provided updates on the future of Chelsea-linked Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

The Real Madrid man has put himself in the transfer window this summer after pouncing on the chances he received at the Santiago Bernabéu last season after injuries to Thibaut Courtois and later Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Ever since Courtois was reinstated into the starting XI by Carlo Ancelotti for the Champions League final, a call for which he was vindicated with a fifteenth European trophy for Los Blancos, Lunin has been expected to leave the club to become a first-choice goalkeeper elsewhere.

While Law claims Chelsea don’t deem Lunin fit for their requirements, Romano has further added to that by mentioning that Real Madrid have received no formal enquiry from the Blues thus far.

“Real Madrid have not received any approach from Chelsea for Andrij Lunin so far.

“The only topic discussed is about Kepa who’s giving total priority to Real Madrid… in case Lunin leaves.

“Kepa received formal proposal from Al Ittihad but still waiting for Real Madrid.”

Lunin’s contract at Real Madrid, fetching him €2.81 million every year, is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Lunin a move that would work for Chelsea

Buying Lunin and sending Kepa, who is also in the final year of his contract, the other way is a call many would consider an easy one to make for Chelsea.

However, if they really do believe that Lunin does not meet their requirements by virtue of his profile as a goalkeeper, then things certainly become complicated, although it would surely be in their best interests if they don’t pursue him.

Robert Sánchez is being expected to be Enzo Maresca‘s first choice going into the season. One hopes for the Blues’ sake that the Spaniard is able to shake off his issues from the past couple of seasons and really come good if Chelsea are to go into next season without a different goalkeeper.
