“I am feeling better,” says star Chelsea forward as he aims to get going in new season

Christopher Nkunku looking to get going for Chelsea this season

With Chelsea ready to depart for the US for their 2024/25 pre-season tour, their French forward Christopher Nkunku sat down with the club’s in-house media team for an interview.

After an injury-ridden debut season at Stamford Bridge, Nkunku is ready to get going in the Blue shirt.

“I am feeling better after the difficult season last year. I am feeling better.”

“I had a nice break during the summer. I needed it. I worked a little bit before coming here, but it was important for me to break after this year, for my head also. It was good.”

“Now I am working in every training session to stay fit and to go forward in a good way. Pre-season is very good and the team is good. We are practicing the hard work to be fresh and ready to play some friendly games.”

Nkunku arrived at Chelsea last summer amidst a lot of fanfare on the back of a £52m move from RB Leipzig, but for the majority of his debut season at Stamford Bridge, the France international found himself struggling with injuries. He missed a total of 39 games for Chelsea last season, managing to make only 14 appearances, in which he produced 3 goals.

The 26-year-old came through the Paris Saint-Germain academy and spent four years on their books as a senior pro between 2015 and 2019 before moving to RB Leipzig for €19.5 million. In Germany, he established himself as one of the most industrious and productive forwards in Europe, capable of playing both as a lone striker and in a supporting role and adept in both attack and defence. He made 172 appearances for Die Roten Bullen, scoring 70 goals and providing 56 assists.

Nkunku’s contract at Chelsea, fetching him £195k per week, is set to run until June 2029.

Nkunku almost a forgotten man

Amidst the ongoing chaos at Stamford Bridge, of which player turnover is but a part, one can be forgiven for forgetting that Nkunku is a Chelsea player now.

Because of the ridicule Chelsea are subjected to, and given his absence for most of last season, it is easy to forget, albeit a bit unfair, how good a player Nkunku had become in the Bundesliga.

As he returns to full fitness ahead of a new season, one only hopes that his long-term injury niggles are a thing of the past and he can get going properly this time around.
