Chelsea's new surprise signing tells Blues supporters what to expect of him

Chelsea sign versatile Portuguese prodigy Renato Veiga

Chelsea have signed Portuguese prodigy Renato Veiga as the Blues make their sixth addition of the summer transfer window.

The West Londoners have continued to build on their transfer policy of late where they sign young players with high ceilings at Stamford Bridge and aid their development into their potential. Sticking to the policy despite the PSR problems, Todd Boehly & Co. acquired Portugal U20 international from Swiss side FC Basel in a €14m deal.

The Blues made the transfer official on Friday amid speculations. Viega follows Tosin Adarabioyo, Omari Kellyman, Marc Guiu and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to a Chelsea move with the club also finding an agreement to bring Estevao Willian to the Bridge in 2025.

The West Londoners transfer for Viega has come as a bit of a surprise with no rumours highlighted in the media until the deal was in the advanced stages.

Jack of all trades, master of defence?

Chelsea have been looking to sign a left-sided defender in the ongoing summer transfer window and they consider the Portuguese to be the man for the role as he can play on the left-back, centre-back as well as in a midfield role.

Enzo reportedly views him as a left-sided defender who can invert into midfield and the club will access the player in the upcoming pre-season tour to the United States before making a decision on his immediate future i.e. if he stays at the Bridge for the next season or is sent on loan to aid his development.

Not many Chelsea faithful would have heard about Veiga before he was been linked with a move to West London. In his first interview following his move to Chelsea, the 20-year-old has described his style of play as ‘smart’ and ‘aggressive’ as he looks to make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

Speaking in an interview with Chelsea’s official website, Veiga said:

“I’m a smart, aggressive player. I’m comfortable on the ball and I would describe myself as a complete player due to my versatility. I’m comfortable in many positions on the pitch. I wouldn’t say I have a favourite position because it depends on the opponent or tactical elements, but I have played at left-back, centre-back and as a defensive midfielder.I like to defend a lot and with my height and physical strength, I enjoy it. I like to control the game with or without the ball.”

This confidence and ability to come across as a mature player would definitely help him settle into life in London and Chelsea fans would be hoping his performances are equally impressive on the pitch as they are promising off it.
