Chelsea hold talks with Grêmio for “new Neymar” Gabriel Mec
As per Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, as reported by Football London, Chelsea are in talks with Brazilian side Grêmio over a potential deal for their wonderkid, Gabriel Mec.
The 2008-born attacking midfielder, having displayed ability to operate both centrally and out wide, has made only three senior appearances in his career thus far, that too for the Grêmio U20 side, but the Blues have seen enough to bring him to the Bridge as one for the future.
If completed, the deal would make Mec yet another promising youth prospect snapped up by Chelsea this summer as part of their long-term rebuild. The Blues have already roped in Omari Kellyman, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Renato Veiga this summer, while the likes of Estêvão Willian and Kendry Páez will arrive at the club next year.
Chelsea enter another season ahead with a new coach in Enzo Maresca and are set to play in Europe this season, in the newly-reformed Europa Conference League.
They kick of their 2024/25 campaign on Sunday, August 18, at home against reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City.
Bolstering youth not a bad idea
That Chelsea have been buying too many players over the past couple seasons is an understatement at this point.
At the first-team level, this becomes a problem. On the youth level, however, or even in terms of young signings not expected to break into the starting XI right away, this is not the worst way of going about things.
The team tasked with bringing these talented youngsters from all over the world cut their teeth at Brighton and are, therefore, more than reliable. And then football has always been a cutthroat business, so rest assured not all of these promising players will make the cut in the coming years. Some will be moved on altogether, while others may still be kept in the setup at the Chelsea owners’ other clubs, like Strasbourg out in France.
