Chelsea star takes shot at Enzo Fernandez as Argentine risks dressing room mutiny with racist chant

Chelsea stars Wesley Fofana and Axel Disasi have unfollowed Enzo Fernandez on social media

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has reacted to Argentine international Enzo Fernandez for his racist chants against French players. Fofana has shared the video on Instagram, describing it as “Football in 2024 uninhibited racism”. France Football Association is set to move legal action against the Argentine players.

Enzo Fernandez and his Argentine teammates won the Copa America title on Sunday by beating Colombia in the extra time. Argentina’s national team clinched their 16th Copa America title in Miami. Following the match, Argentine teammates celebrated their victory in the team bus by singing various songs, and they also sang racist and discriminatory chants about French team players.

The lyrics of the derogatory chant were about French players who have African heritage, and from several countries holding the French passport. Argentina faced the France national team in the last World Cup final, and the Latin American side clinched the historical title after 36 years. The Argentine player’s unethical activity has disappointed the football world and they have been criticised for bringing racism and discrimination to the game by many football pundits and fans.

Chelsea have officially announced through a statement that they will have an internal inquiry about the incident against midfielder Enzo Fernandez. He has lost the support of his Chelsea teammates as one of the Blues stars and France international Welsey Fofana commented on the video on social media. Chelsea have seven France players who are mixed race in their first-team squad – Fofana, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Lesley Ugochukwu, Christopher Nkunku, Malo Gusto and Malang Sarr. Fofana, along with other French players like Axel Disasi, have unfollowed Fernandez on Instagram, sending a strong message of their rejection of such behaviour.
