Reece James puts up Instagram story to acknowledge Gareth Southgate’s resignation as England manager
Chelsea defender Reece James took to Instagram earlier today to put up a story on Instagram as a show of gratitude towards Gareth Southgate after the latter announced his resignation from the post of the England men’s national football team manager.
The 24-year-old was part of the academy setup at the time Southgate took the reins of the senior setup, into which he graduated not too long after.
Southgate’s resignation comes on the back of the Three Lions’ defeat in the UEFA Euro 2024 final as they went down against Spain, marking back-to-back eliminations in the tournament at the final hurdle, having failed to beat Italy on home soil three years ago.
Despite failing to win any silverware with the team, Southgate leaves the role as the most successful manager in England Men’s history since Sir Alf Ramsey, with whom England won the World Cup in 1966.
Reece James would have been part of the England side that made the final again this time round had it not been for another injury-ridden season that also saw him struggle for game time. The 24-year-old missed a total of 38 games last season.
Hard road ahead for James
Despite England enjoying an abundance of talented right-backs, Reece James stands on top of the list when he is fit.
That is the caveat, however. He has rarely been fit recently, to the point that it is becoming a worrying trend for someone who is just about entering his prime years.
