Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella played a pivotal role in Spain’s massive Round of 16 win against Georgia on Sunday. Cucurella celebrated his victory by sharing pictures with the caption “To quarters!” on social media. The defender has been one of the consistent performers for the Spanish national team in Euro 2024.
Willy Sagnol and his team were full of confidence for their Round of 16 match against Spain. They made it into the knockout stage of their first-ever major tournament, also beating former champions Portugal in the group stage. On the other side, Spain was aiming for their fourth consecutive win in the campaign. Georgia started their game at a high tempo, and Spain conceded an own goal by Robin Le Normand in the 18th minute of the game.
It was a bit shocking for the Spanish fans, as they hadn’t conceded a goal in the campaign, having played against giants like Italy and Croatia in the group stage. But they continued their passing game, while Georgia relied on the counterattack. Rodri started the goal saga for the former World Champions minutes before halftime.
The Spaniards dominated the game in the second half and confirmed their spot in the last eight. Marc Cucurella was one of the key players who contributed to the victory. The full-back displayed a dazzling performance throughout his playing time in both the offensive and defensive departments. He took extra care on his flank after conceding a goal from Georgia. The 25-year-old defender provided a number of key passes to winger Nico Williams, who was magnificent last night, scoring a goal for Spain.
Cucurella is currently considered one of the best full-backs in Euro 2024. The Spaniard’s contribution to the team in both offensive and defensive lines has been crucial in their victories. Stamford Bridge is eagerly awaiting the player’s return; he has been a key player for the West London club for the past two years. Cucurella joined Chelsea from Brighton in the summer of 2022 on a six-year contract.
The Spanish international has appeared in 59 games for the club, scoring one goal and providing four assists. Cucurella will be one of the main players for new manager Enzo Maresca. The Italian may use the player more in attacking roles than defending, possibly allotting Cucurella to play in the left-midfield position, while the left-back position could be given to vice-captain Ben Chilwell, who is awaiting his comeback to the team.
Maresca may not take the risk of selling the Spaniard in the summer. If he sells Cucurella, then Malang Sarr would be the only option to replace Chilwell. Sarr has less experience in playing that position, and the manager can’t completely rely on him. Cucurella’s pace is an added advantage for Chelsea, helping the player with speedy attacking and defensive recovery.
Cucurella has impressed the fans of Stamford Bridge during his two years at the club, and now they are eagerly waiting for his return after Euro 2024.
