Chelsea set to resign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace
Chelsea is set to enter the race for English defender Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace this summer. The player consistently started for Gareth Southgate’s England in the Euro campaign. Premier League rivals Liverpool are also vying to sign the star defender.
Chelsea would be glad to recall their academy graduate back to Stamford Bridge. The 23-year-old defender joined Crystal Palace in 2021 following his journey with Chelsea, and the English defender has improved his game with the Eagles and established himself as one of the best young centre-backs in the league. Guehi missed the second part of the last campaign due to a knee injury, but he earned his spot on Southgate’s squad list for Euro 2024 with his resilience and determination.
He has amazed the English fans with his performance for the Three Lions in the European Championship. In pairing with John Stones, he created a wall in England’s backline and saved many goals for England. He has also impressed multiple football pundits with his Euro stint. The young defender has started 6 games for the team and only missed out on the Round of 16 match-up with Slovenia due to suspension. He has played a major role in the Three Lions’ journey to the final, and his performance in the campaign has also increased his stock in the transfer market.
Crystal Palace have two more years of contract with the defender and the Eagles have no intentions to sell him in the summer. But the youngster would not reject the offers from the top Premier League clubs, as he will get more exposure there. Transfer correspondent Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport.
“But, in turn, his value is going up too – so who is going to pay upwards of £60million for him in the coming weeks? They have every reason to expect £65 million for him in the current market.
“Chelsea and Liverpool are two clubs to pay some attention to as the player now refocuses and considers what he wants next in his career. His ambition will be heightened.”
Chelsea to bolster the backline
The veteran Brazilian defender Thiago Silva left the West London club in May and joined the Brazilian club Fluminense. Chelsea’s new manager Enzo Maresca has a big task in the summer to find a replacement for the Brazilian legend in Chelsea’s backline. He has already strengthened the backline by signing Tosin Adarabioyo for free.
Currently, Levi Colwill and Axel Disasi are the main centre-back options for Maresca in the squad, and he can also use Wesley Fofana as a primary option. As part of bolstering the squad, Chelsea are set to offload Trevoh Chalobah in summer.
