“You never know” – Chelsea defender leaves door open to future Barcelona return

Spain star Marc Cucurella says he fully committed to Chelsea

Marc Cucurella’s future has been doubtful at Chelsea, despite spending just two seasons at the club. The former Brighton & Hove Albion left to join the Blues in the summer of the 2022–23 season, but since then has been more of a liability than an asset.

His time at Chelsea has seen him sit on the sidelines for the majority of the campaign, but last term in the second part of the season, the left-back showed us why we signed him and since then has been in good form. His exploits saw him get called to the Spain national team for Euro 2024, and Cucurella has demonstrated excellent performances in La Roja’s last two matches.

This will give the Blues the benefit of the doubt, as Cucurella has elevated his performance since he returned from that ankle injury in March, which has been excellent for us. Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s new manager, will be excited to work with reinvigorated Cucurella.

Despite the speculations, the left-back isn’t entertaining any transfers away from Chelsea. The 24-year-old emerged from the Barcelona B academy before joining Brighton, and when asked about a return to the Catalan club, (h/t Metro) he told COPE:

‘’Today I don’t even think about it; it doesn’t even cross my mind. I think that’s already happened. You never know what can happen, but I’m not thinking about that. At Chelsea, I’ve had some difficult years, but I’m happy and my family is comfortable.’’

Marc Cucurella has been phenomenal since his return from ankle injury.

He may have endured a difficult period at Chelsea but seems to be now settling well and will be a crucial player next season because, under Maresca, he will be an important player who likes to use full-backs as inverted full-backs, and the Spanish international will flourish in that position because he has already been used similarly under former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Cucurella has revived himself, and he is looking like the player Chelsea expected him to be when they signed him. He seems to have entered prime performance, and for Spain, he has been top-class in Euro 2024. Chelsea should do everything to keep the 25-year-old because he will have an important role to play and shouldn’t entertain any offers for the defender.
