Porto might be forced to sell Diogo Costa with Chelsea keen

According to football.london, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester City are closely monitoring Porto star Diogo Costa ahead of a potential summer transfer.

Porto are aware that they might need to cash in on Costa, but they will not let him go cheaply. Costa’s contract includes a £63 million release clause, and the Portuguese club is reportedly firm on selling him for a sum close to that amount. This would place him among the most expensive goalkeepers of all time, alongside Kepa Arrizabalaga, Alisson Becker, and Andre Onana.

Clubs eyeing’ £63m Diogo Costa as new signing tipped for exit

Chelsea have been on the hunt for a left-back, goalkeeper, center-back, and striker, although it remains unclear if they will fill all of these positions.

The links to a goalkeeper might seem odd given that the Blues acquired both Djordje Petrovic and Robert Sanchez last summer. However, new manager Enzo Maresca is known to prefer a ball-playing keeper in his system, which might explain the interest.

Diogo Costa has been one of Europe’s best goalkeepers in recent years, and he was particularly outstanding against Arsenal in the Champions League during the 2023/24 season. His skills and performances have made him a sought-after target, and his ability to fit into Maresca’s system could be a significant factor in Chelsea’s pursuit.

The 24-year-old surrendered only 38 goals in 45 games in all competitions while keeping 17 clean sheets. Despite this, Porto may be obliged to sell Diogo Costa this summer. The Dragons may need to make a significant sale, with Costa being a genuine candidate to leave the club.

Costa has reportedly attracted the interest of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City, with all three clubs keeping an eye on him and scouting him for a potential summer move.

Costa came via Porto’s development system and was promoted to the senior squad in 2019. He has made 154 appearances for them thus far, becoming a regular during the last three years. Costa is certain to start for Portugal at Euro 2024, and his performances in Germany may persuade Arsenal, Chelsea, or City to make a transfer this summer. Bayern Munich is also thought to be following his progress.
