Cole Palmer will have a different role next season under new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. Palmer joined the Blues from Manchester City last summer and went on to establish his name, producing 22 Premier League goals and cementing his position as the Blues’ best player.
Maresca wants Palmer to operate as No. 10, which means the Blues could sign a new winger who will compete with Noni Madueke on the right wing for the starting spot. This is according to the Express.
The former City player operated as an attacking midfielder last season plenty of times but wasn’t as effective as he was on the wings. Thus, it will be interesting to see how the former city assistant manager will get the best of Palmer in that area.
Additionally, it establishes a new system because Palmer will now work in a totally different manner than he did under Mauricio Pochettino, which will have an effect on performance. Palmer was first discovered by Maresca as a City Academy player, and Maresca is undoubtedly aware of both Palmer’s inadequacies and qualities.
Palmer has great vision, and his ability to find players is what makes him a big creator because he also had 15 assists in all competitions last season. Hence, he could boast more assists next season and be less involved in goalscoring, given that he has more presence in finding the back of the net when playing out wide.
Additionally, he will flourish in Maresca’s style, which emphasises possession-based football. This means Chelsea players will need to exercise greater patience and use their protracted passing to penetrate the opposition’s defence.
Palmer has played under Pep Guardiola and shouldn’t take much time adjusting to the Maresca system, as both systems are the same, and Palmer should be ready to thrive and give us another wonderful season.
Next season, hopefully, Chelsea will start on a strong note because things won’t be tolerated this time after Mauricio Pochettino’s exit, despite all assumptions that he will remain at the job after leading the Blues to a sixth-place finish last campaign.
