Manchester United have dropped interest in appointing ex-Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino months after his departure from the Blues. United continue their pursuit of a new head coach as Erik ten Hag’s job remains to be on the line.
According to The Times, Pochettino is now out of the frame for the job at Old Trafford as United continue their search for a new head coach for the upcoming season. Pochettino guided Chelsea to the Carabao Cup final and FA Cup semi-final in a single season.
United couldn’t replicate their first season’s performance under Ten Hag’s in the previous campaign as the club finished eighth in the Premier League, but their FA Cup win in the final against Manchester City propelled them to a Europa League spot for the upcoming campaign.
Meanwhile, the Blues finished the season sixth in the league under the Argentine manager, but the board decided to part ways with the 52-year-old with mutual consent. Since then, Pochettino has been unemployed and has been linked with a job at a few clubs.
However, now he won’t be taking charge of United after they cut him off the list of potential replacements for the Dutch manager. Chelsea, on the other hand, had already found a Pochettino replacement and appointed Enzo Maresca as head coach.
Pochettino doesn’t have to prove that he is an ideal manager for whichever club he joins. At Cheslea, he showed that despite plenty of injuries and a bunch of young players with no experience, he managed to finish the season exceptionally. If he had had a better squad, he might have led the Blues to silverware.
Meanwhile, Ten Hag has done a decent job at United, despite the club’s poor finish last season. In his two campaigns, he led them to two trophies, and he should get time to show his management credentials. Key issues for clubs have been not being patient with their managers. Chelsea and United should use Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City as examples to back their managers for years.
Pochettino will certainly have clubs lined up to appoint him; now it will be up to him to choose which side he wants to next manage.
