Ian Wright has slammed the VAR decision to rule out Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku‘s goal in the Belgium game against Romania. The 31-year-old thought he doubled their lead when he rifled into the back of the net only for semi-automatic technology to rule him offside in a hair-splitting decision.
This isn’t the first time Lukaku’s goal has been ruled out; the striker had two goals disallowed in their 1-0 loss to Slovakia. The Belgium forward has cut a frustrating figure so far in the matches, but the forward had an assist in Belgium’s win against Romania for their opening goal.
Now the Red Devils have three points in Group E, and their last match will be against Ukraine. A win will see them secure the last-16 spot in Euro 2024. Lukaku will be ready to make an impact after the striker has seen his three goals disallowed by VAR.
And Wright hasn’t been happy with the way Var has functioned against the Belgium striker and ruled out Lukaku’s goal against Romania. Speaking to ITV Football, he gave his opinion on the technology and said:
“As a striker, I’m never going to be able to accept that kind of offside.”
Ian Wright is entitled to his opinion, but we cannot rule out the VAR decision because it is doing his job, and if the striker had timed his run more carefully, maybe his goal would have counted. Lukaku is an experienced striker, and he knows when to time his run and trap the defender into keeping him onside. However, he has also been unlucky in Belgium’s last two matches.
However, he will have plenty of opportunities to score goals. Belgium’s next matchup is against Ukraine, and they are favourites to win. Because he can make a big difference when he’s in form, Lukaku will be hoping to be in peak shape and cause the Ukrainian defenders all sorts of issues.
