Cole Palmer evokes his days with Mauricio Pochettino and says he built a great relationship with the Argentine manager. The 52-year-old departed Chelsea on mutual consent, which came as a big surprise despite the Argentine leading the Blues to a sixth-place finish in the league last season.
However, one of the players who thrived under former Tottenham Hotspur manager was Cole Palmer, who joined the Blues from Manchester City on a deadline day. His signing came as a big surprise as Palmer wasn’t even a starter at City and it was seen as a strange signing by the Blues.
The player himself smashed it down for good, leading the Blues’ assault line and scoring 22 goals in the Premier League during his first campaign. He is currently among the team’s most important players, and he hopes to have a big influence once more the following season.
However, the forward has immensely thanked Pochettino, who gave him the freedom to play wherever he wanted, and says he was sorry for his exit from Chelsea. Speaking to the media, he said via Telegraph, (subscription required):
“I was sorry, because he put his trust in me, and we built a good relationship. Not just with him but with all his staff who were there. When he left, I was gutted.’’
His departure was shocking because he did pretty well in his first season as Chelsea boss. Palmer isn’t the only one who felt disappointed with his exit; many players were stunned by his exit. We cannot blame Pochettino entirely, but he did manage to give many young players a chance and nurture them into Premier League-proven players, making Enzo Maresca’s job easy.
The Italian manager won’t have to start from scratch next season. Especially Palmer, who will certainly thrive under the Italian manager because it was he who found his talent at the City Academy. Palmer will have a big role to play in the next campaign, as the Blues will hope to challenge for trophies next season.
