Fabrizio Romano reveals reason why Chelsea are not going ahead with Nico Williams deal despite making contact

Fabrizio Romano reports Chelsea have no intention to sign Nico Williams

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Chelsea’s pursuit of Athletic Bilbao sensation Nico Williams and says the Blues are not going to sign the forward due to the cost which doesn’t align with the club’s financial policy.

Williams is currently making waves at Euro 2024 with Spain after the forward established himself as one of the hottest prospects with Athletic Bilbao last season. The 21-year-old appeared in 31 games in the league for Bilbao and recorded 14 assists and five goals.

The Blues recently were in the same circumstances and did a similar thing with Michael Olise after continuing to show interest in him. They were leading the race but decided to abandon it due to the forward’s wages, which could have disturbed the Blues’ financial books.

Romano has now ended the Blues’ interest in Williams and says the club is not going to look for a Spanish international in the summer window. Speaking to GiveMeSport, he further revealed:

“Chelsea have made contact in recent months to understand the conditions of any potential deal for Williams. What I’m told now is that although appreciation remains, Chelsea is not advancing on Williams because of the cost of the deal.”

Chelsea are not going to sign Nico Williams.

In all honesty, the Blues don’t necessarily need Williams because they already have one in Mykhaylo Mudryk, but one can say Williams is better and younger and brings more attacking threat from the left side of the attack. The main issue will be his wages, which could be a problem for Chelsea to pay. Another thing is that he might need time in the Premier League to settle. We already have three players, Christopher Nkunku, Raheem Sterling, and Mudryk, operating from similar positions.

That Chelsea didn’t want to sign Williams made sense when the Blues opted to back off from their pursuit of Olise. Rather, we must give Mudryk more time and help him develop his other characteristics so that when the time comes, we will have a top-tier player.
