Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Borussia Dortmund are preparing a new bid for Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen in the range of €25 million in order to start talks with Chelsea, despite the Blues demanding £35 million for the player.
Both clubs are expected to start talks, as Dortmund are keen on signing Maatsen, who enjoyed a terrific season with the German club and also reached the final of the competition. The 22-year-old is open to joining Dortmund, but it’s going to be challenging for them to do as the Blues would expect them to meet their asking price.
Maatsen was loaned out to Dortmund in January after the youngster found it hard to get into the starting lineup under former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino. Following his move to German club Maatsen, he excelled for them and played a crucial role in helping them reach the Champions League final, where they lost 2-0 to Real Madrid.
Considering that the fullback had one of his best seasons, Chelsea ought to have raised his asking price, which would have raised his market value. In order to satisfy themselves, the Blues need to bargain for a better deal than what they are currently providing.
It will also help them financially, as Maatsen is a homegrown player, and his exit will generate a pure profit, which the Blues shouldn’t miss. Maatsen’s performance will certainly attract other clubs, and if Dortmund are not willing to meet his price, Chelsea can look for other options.
This time we need to be wise with our sales and try to get a good amount of profit that we can use to spend on new signings in the summer. It’s unlikely that the Blues want to keep Maatsen, so his permanent move to Dortmund is the only viable option for the Dutch player.
He needed a club and some games to prove his mettle, which Chelsea couldn’t provide. He is just 22 and has plenty of years ahead of him to become a talented full-back. He has already shown what he can achieve if given the trust and backing of the club.
