Opinion: Enzo Maresca's new position change plan for Cole Palmer should bode well for Chelsea
Danny Simpson, a former Leicester City defender, confessed he was astonished when Enzo Maresca was convinced to join Chelsea. He said,
“It’s a bit mad, to be honest, I was surprised he left” (via Football London)
Simpson admits he was startled, but he understands when a top-six club calls. The Italian led the Foxes back to the Premier League, quickly recovering from their relegation to the Championship.
Leicester City officials have also voiced their displeasure at Enzo Maresca’s decision to quit the club and take on a coaching post at Chelsea in their official statement. Maresca’s hiring was announced on Monday, barely 10 days after Mauricio Pochettino’s mutually agreed-upon exit from Stamford Bridge.
Maresca led Leicester to the Championship title last season, barely defeating Ipswich Town by one point. His time at Leicester began on June 16 of the previous year, and in that short time, he successfully led the Foxes back to the Premier League.
Simpson also explained that Maresca promoted them to champions and had everything he needed at the club to succeed.
“I just don’t know why you’d want to leave such a great club. He’s got them promoted as champions and he’s got everything there to be successful.”
“No disrespect to Chelsea, but look at the foundations at Leicester, the training ground and the facilities. But we all know what it’s like whether you’re a player or a manager, a bigger club comes calling and you get tempted.
“However, saying that, Kieran McKenna decided to stay at Ipswich when Manchester United were meant to be interested him in.
“As a player that must be great for them, he’s showing that commitment to them. They’ll be on holiday now and it will great to have heard the manager has signed a new contract.
“But at the end of the day we just don’t know the ins-and-outs do we?”
Leicester will now look for a replacement while Chelsea will hope they stick with this manager for a long time.
Chelsea will hope for a better era under Maresca than what they had under Pochettino and Graham Potter. Let’s wait and see how it goes.
