Chelsea star Cole Palmer recently opened up about his inclusion in the England provisional squad ahead of Euro 2024. The forward expressed his surprise at being picked by Gareth Southgate for the tournament, as the Three Lions are considered one of the favorites to win the competition.
Palmer’s journey to this point has been remarkable. His surprising move from Manchester City to Chelsea on the deadline day last summer caught many off guard. The 22-year-old was relatively unknown at City, making his transfer to Chelsea an unpredictable signing.
Few could have imagined that Palmer would end the season with 22 Premier League goals in his debut campaign for Chelsea. His impressive performance made him one of the most underrated young players in the league. In addition to his goal-scoring feats, Palmer’s outstanding season earned him the Premier League Young Player of the Year award.
Palmer will now have a chance to represent England in the Euro and will be hoping for the preferred choice for Southgate in the matches. Speaking exclusively to SPORTbible, he said:
“You’re sitting there with all the other lads and a manager saying, ‘The aim will be to get to the senior squad’. But you’re looking at the senior squad and thinking, ‘Oh, there are so many players [ahead of me]. I never doubted my ability, but there were a lot of factors that contributed to [being in contention for the plane]. So I have surprised myself.”
What a season it has been for Cole Palmer, who, at the age of 22, has gone from being virtually unknown to one of the most well-known players in the Premier League. His outstanding performances have earned him a spot in the England provisional squad for Euro 2024.
His hard work and impressive form have rightfully earned him a call-up to the England squad ahead of Euro 2024. Palmer’s story is a testament to what can be achieved with perseverance and talent, and now he will have the chance to showcase his abilities on the international stage.
Making the starting lineup for Euro 2024 won’t be simple for Cole Palmer, as the Three Lions are stacked with talented players. Palmer will have to compete with the likes of Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka for the right flank berth. However, his versatility could work in his favour, as he can also be deployed as an attacking midfielder.
Southgate faces a big headache ahead of Euro 2024, and Cole Palmer will be hoping to play in some of the matches. Given the depth of talent in the England squad, it will be tough for him to participate in all games, as Southgate will aim to give other players equal minutes on the pitch.
Playing for England is never easy, as the team boasts plenty of star players in every position. Despite this, Palmer’s remarkable season with Chelsea has earned him a spot in the squad, and he will be eager to seize any opportunities that come his way during the tournament. Like he showed at Chelsea, sometimes all one needs is the opportunity to shine.
