A View From The Bridge

Chelsea react to £50m Michael Olise transfer by entering into talks with North American superstar

Chelsea hold talks with LOSC Lille for Jonathan David

Chelsea have held talks with LOSC Lille over a move for their star striker Jonathan David to Stamford Bridge. After deciding not to pursue Michael Olise, the Blues have turned their attention towards the Lille forward, who had a breakout campaign, netting 26 goals across all competitions.

According to Athletic, (h/t Express) Chelsea have held talks with David’s representatives over a potential move in the coming months, and his signing could be attainable given that he has only one year left on his contract. David could consider moving to a club where he has a chance of winning silverware.

Lille star David could be available this season as the Ligue 1 club hopes to make revenue from his exit. Additionally, the club also shares a great relationship with Letang through their BlueCo consortium’s ownership of fellow Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg.

David is currently on duty with the national team for the Copa America, as Canada suffered their first defeat against Argentina in the opening game. The centre-forward could be a wise signing for the Blues.

Despite his youth, David has a lot of experience, thus we could justify his action. Additionally, he performs consistently, so you know what to expect from him each matchday. Technically sound but not a great finisher; a hard worker who enjoys going deep like Jackson. Of course, he still has a lot to learn.

While being a mediocre finisher does not imply being a bad one, it does place him below top finishers such as Harry Kane and Erling Haaland. He finishes stronger than Jackson, of course. His objective is self-explanatory. If Chelsea can sign David, he will also help the Senegalese, as his presence in front of goal would be crucial for the Blues to score goals.

Moreover, he has a year left on his contract. Therefore, Lille certainly doesn’t want to risk keeping him and losing him for free; rather, they will get some profit from his exit, and Chelsea’s good relationship with the Lille board could aid in making the deal happen.
