Chelsea move was 'never an option' for Cesc Fabregas as Spain legend nears move to new club

Fabrizio Romano confirms Cesc Fabregas was never an option to take charge of Chelsea

Fabrizio Romano provides an update on Chelsea’s approach to Cesc Fabregas to include the Spain international in the club’s staff and has denied the speculations, and says the former Spanish player was never an option for the West Londoners.

Chelsea appointed Enzo Maresca as the new manager from Leicester City after they mutually decided to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino last month following a sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

Fabregas coaching credentials came to light when he led Como to Serie A promotion last season as their assistant coach. The former Chelsea manager was seen as one of the young pragmatic managers, and when the Blues sacked Pochettino, Fabregas was linked with the move given that he also visited Cobham training ground.

However, that is not the case now that Romano has confirmed Fabregas revealed that the former Blues star was never an option and turned these rumours on in his recent Daily Briefing, where he said:

‘’Cesc Fàbregas is on the verge of signing a new long-term deal as Como head coach after excellent work last season. Being included in Chelsea staff was never an option this summer; full focus was on the Como project after getting promoted to Serie A.’’

Fabregas could have been a member of Chelsea’s backroom staff because he has played for us and is familiar with the entire organisation, but Maresca would have placed greater faith in his backroom staff maybe in future, the Spanish international could be our next head coach.

For Fabregas, it will be too soon to manage a big club, and given he doesn’t have management experience as head coach, it doesn’t make sense to appoint him, given the current state of Chelsea, he would have been under massive pressure. Moreover, the Blues have never appointed him because he is still young, and now his actual tenure will start as head coach when he manages Como in Serie A.

Chelsea made a wise appointment to make Maresca the new head coach, who has experience in the Premier League and managed an elite club before becoming Blues head coach. Of course, he will be under big pressure, but he has the identity to build the club from scratch and lead them to glory. Fabregas will solidify his management credentials at Como, and if that makes them a competitive side in the Italian league, then certainly next season many big clubs will be after him.
