A View From The Bridge

Chelsea legend admits staying at the club for 4x longer than he initially planned to

Thiago Silva says he planned to remain at Chelsea short-term and never thought of continuing for five years

Former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva opened up about his time at the club and revealed that before joining the Blues, he only planned on staying there for a season before he ended up remaining for five campaigns.

The Brazilian centre-back recently left the club to join his boyhood side, Fluminense. A large number of fans flocked to the stadium to witness the Brazilian legend give his presentation in Maracana and also pay respect to Chelsea.

Silva joined the Blues in 2019 from Paris Saint-Germain and became a household name despite signing for the club at the age of 35. It never felt like he was in his mid-30s, and he always performed at his peak level.

Silva signed a short-term deal, but his performance convinced the club that he needed to continue playing for the Blues, and given that he was supposed to remain for a short time, Silva remained for five seasons, after he revealed during his unveiling, via Mirror:

“Chelsea means a lot to me. I came here with the intention of only staying for a year, and it ended up being four years.’’

When Silva signed with Chelsea at the age of 35, it was obvious he was well past his peak, so his arrival undoubtedly raised a few concerns. However, everything was debunked when the Brazilian put on the blue jersey and demonstrated his continued qualities. The Blues board was undoubtedly persuaded by his performance to stay with the team for longer than a season.

Being a 39-year-old player in the Premier League was an enormous feat because most players retire at that age or are competing in leagues outside of Europe. People should look at this and realise how absurd it was for Silva to continue to be at the top of his game even though he was in his mid-30s.

Silva managed to stamp his authority in just five seasons and became the club’s most adored player during his time here. Only a few players have won over the fans during their long-term tenure at the club. Silva left Cheslea as a legend and will certainly come back in the future because he respects Cheslea so much.
