A View From The Bridge

28-year-old star wants Chelsea transfer in £50m deal; Blues not scared by price tag

Journalist Pete O’Rourke says Ivan Toney is willing to join Chelsea

Ivan Toney is open to a move to Chelsea, who are in the market to sign a centre-forward in the upcoming transfer window. The Blues have set their priority on finding a reliable No. 9 who can remain reliable and also aid Nicolas Jackson in his development.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Pete O’Rourke confirmed that Chelsea also sees the England international as an attainable signing and could move for him in the summer.

The Bees are set to demand £50 million for their star striker, who returned to action in January after missing the first half of the season due to betting and breaching the Premier League. This saw the 28-year-old handed an eight-month ban.

Toney fits the description of the striker Chelsea is looking to sign—someone who can be ruthless in front of goal. In addition, he has Premier League experience and has the ability to alter the team’s results in front of goal. The likes of Cole Palmer, Christopher Nkunku, and Enzo Fernandez will be providing assistance to Toney.

He possesses great striking ability and excellent boxing awareness. He is also tall and a bully for defenders, and this is what Chelsea needs in a centre-forward next season. However, the forward ended the last season with just four goals in the league, which could raise questions about whether Toney still has the ability to be the Blues No. 9.

Brentford endured a poor spell and the arrival of Toney couldn’t make much impact. This might have lowered his stocks in the market and the Blues will get forward for an affordable fee now it seems not many clubs are also keen on signing. Thus, it’s a big chance for the Blues to pounce on his signing now that they are unlikely to make a move for Victor Osimhen.

Toney is a striker with Premier League experience, which the Blues need, but his age—he is now 28 and soon be in his 30s—will be the biggest consideration. It will therefore raise questions if Chelsea will make a move for him in the summer.
