According to journalist Simon Phillips via GiveMeSport, former Chelsea star Tammy Abraham emerges as the top candidate for the Blues summer window transfer target. However, the interest is not concrete as the Blues explore their options for the No. 9 position.
Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko are also being linked to Chelsea, which is looking to add a striker who can score even in the tiniest situations. Nicolas Jackson, who Chelsea signed last season, had a difficult start to his debut season but made progress towards the end, finishing with 14 league goals.
However, the Blues feel they need a striker with a clinical finish, and now another option has emerged, as the club is now showing interest in former academy player Abraham. The 26-year-old was loaned to AS Roma, where he enjoyed an incredible first season, but a cruciate ligament injury kept him out for an entire season.
Abraham returned to action in April and finished the season with a goal and assist in Roma’s final eight league games of the season. Abraham has a contract with the Serie A club until 2026, but the Blues have a buyback clause of £68 million, which they can trigger in the summer.
When Abraham joined Roma, he had a fantastic spell in his first season, scoring 27 goals across all competitions, but couldn’t replicate the goalscoring form in the second season, producing only nine goals in all tournaments, and suffered a season-ending injury last season.
The Blues are only mildly interested in Abraham, and if they undertake, it may be risky because he just returned from a long-term injury and will need some time to get back on track. In addition, he will be playing in the Premier League, where he will need to exert more effort.
We are sceptical of whether he is a consistent striker for us because his form has also been inconsistent. Chelsea should evaluate their circumstances thoroughly before making a striker signing. Therefore, it would be wiser to look at alternative choices that will present us with more opportunities to score goals the next season.
