Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino decides to resign as head coach with mutual consent after just less than a year in the position. This left the club’s supporters and the Blues’ players stunned, as the boss was expected to stay for the upcoming season.
After a successful conclusion to his first season in command, Pochettino enjoyed the utmost support from his players, and the news of his leaving has not gone down well in the locker room. Players have already gone through several managerial changes since Todd Boehly took over Chelsea and they did not want to go through that all over again.
Signs that Chelsea were moving in the right direction under Pochettino had left his young team feeling optimistic about the future. His departure seems to have a major effect on some players’ futures at Chelsea in particular.
Nicolas Jackson joined Chelsea from Villarreal last summer with a lot of expectations, given his performance for his former team was quite impressive. However, he has failed to live up to those expectations drastically, only scoring 17 goals in his 44 appearances for the Blues.
He has continuously failed to convert decent chances throughout the campaign, which raised many questions regarding his appearance in the team’s lineup. Despite all the doubts and the striker’s poor performances, Pochettino always believed in him and he was insistent that the striker was just taking some time to adjust to the team and would soon unlock his true potential.
Hence, the departure of the manager could certainly see Jackson missing out on his spot in the club’s playing XI in the future if his poor form continues. He will need to prove his worth to the upcoming boss as soon as possible to secure his spot on the first team.
Ian Maatsen has only played 16 games for Chelsea’s senior team since he joined last summer. Struggling with poor performance and less game time, Maatsen was sent to Borussia Dortmund on loan mid-season in January. There, he enjoyed performances, already making 22 appearances for them and chipping in three impactful goals.
Maatsen expressed his desire to remain with Dortmund permanently after enjoying the game time he is receiving with the Bundesliga club. However, with the new staff incoming, Chelsea could reinstate the defender as he meets Boehly’s requirements, given that he is just at the beginning of his career.
Similarly, Trevoh Chalobah, who joined Chelsea senior team in 2021, has had a rough tenure dealing with injuries and less game time. Chelsea has to gather funds to balance their books and bring in some necessary transfers this summer. Chalobah could be a casualty of Chelsea’s new policy, as he’s hardly featured this season due to injury.
With Pochettino out of the game, Chelsea could see a number of players unhappy with the decision. It seems like Pochettino could really make a difference for the Blues if he had a bit more time with the club. Perhaps it is tough to satisfy the owners if you cannot lead Chelsea to a title victory immediately.
