In the latest development, Fabrizio Romano has revealed Chelsea will eye a young coach if the club decides to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino in the summer. Plenty of speculations are circulating that Pochettino’s future remains uncertain at the club.
The 52-year-old led Chelsea to a sixth-place finish in his first term as Blues coach, despite starting the season poorly. But in the midst of the campaign, the Blues bounced back, and the Argentine was able to turn the situation around for the club during the closing stages of the season.
The club board wanted the former Tottenham Hotspur manager to lead the club in European football, and he has done his job, but his future remains doubtful if he will still be continuing at the club next season.
Fabrizio Romano has updated Pochettino’s future on his YouTube channel and what the club decides to do with him in next coming days will be crucial for the Argentine manager. Speaking to the audience, he said:
“The current idea is to have a discussion with Mauricio Pochettino and understand if they can continue together. This is still the priority to continue with Pochettino, but if they can’t keep an eye on young coaches,’’
It should go without saying that we need to appoint a new coach for the upcoming summer since keeping Pochettino should be the club’s first goal. He has often demonstrated to us his pragmatic ability to turn around the club’s circumstances and move things forward. Although Pochettino’s poor start to the season cannot be fully blamed, he did speed up the tempo when it was essential and led the team to European qualification.
Bringing in a new manager is only going backwards because it doesn’t make sense to appoint a new coach with such a young squad. What if it backfires? We need to give Pochettino another season to lead Chelsea, and then we can make a decision on his future after the end of the next season.
The statistics show what a remarkable leap we have made under him. We gained the most points in the 2022–23 total in the Premier League in 2023–24, which should be sufficient to demonstrate how far we have come. Hopefully, the team makes the right choice in deciding to extend the 52-year-old’s tenure.
