Real Madrid won’t retain Chelsea star Kepa Arrizabalaga this summer

According to Spanish outlet AS (h/t Sport Witness), Kepa Arrizabalaga is set to return to Chelsea following the end of his loan spell after Real Madrid decided not to retain the Spanish goalkeeper.

Kepa joined the Spanish giants on loan after an injury to Thibaut Courtois. The 29-year-old remained their first-choice shot-stopper, but an injury derailed his season. Andrew Lunin has since become the Spanish capital’s No. 1 goalie, cementing his spot in the XI.

Since then, Kepa has barely played for the Los Blancos this season and spent most of the time on the bench. Now that Courtois has returned from a long-term injury, Kepa is now further pushed further down the pecking order.

It seems Kepa’s journey has taken some unexpected turns. Returning to Chelsea after Madrid’s decision not to sign him must come as a disappointment, especially considering his hopes for more game time. With Robert Sanchez and Dorde Petrovic already established, breaking into the No. 1 position at Chelsea may indeed be challenging.

However, the 28-year-old still has a chance for glory with Madrid in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund. Winning the title would be a remarkable achievement and could potentially boost his prospects for next season. Yet, with the return of Thibaut Courtois and the emergence of Lunin, competition for the goalkeeper spot remains fierce.

Kepa’s future may still be uncertain, but a Champions League triumph would undoubtedly be a memorable highlight in his career.

Kepa’s return to Chelsea marks the end of a tumultuous chapter for the goalkeeper. Despite his lofty price tag and high expectations, he struggled to find his place at the club. Now, with the Blues looking to move him on, it seems his time at Stamford Bridge will come to a close.

Meanwhile, Petrovic has taken Sanchez’s spot and is now the preferred goalkeeper ahead of the former Brighton & Hove Albion star at Stamford Bridge. Where Kepa fits in this when he returns is debatable.
