Ahead of the game against Bournemouth, Mauricio Pochettino claims that Chelsea FC’s objective this season has been to finish in sixth place in order to guarantee a European berth. Perhaps they will be able to close the season with a more positive result. It’s safe to say that fans believed they wouldn’t be able to guarantee themselves a berth in Europe for the next season in the midst of the campaign.
Chelsea are set to host Bournemouth on Sunday, which will be the last game of the season, and a win can see them finish the campaign in sixth place, but they can also end this term in fifth place if Tottenham Hotspur loses their match against Sheffield United.
The Blues languished for the majority of the season in the 10th spot, mainly due to their poor performance and inability to sustain the winning run. But with the season coming to a close, Chelsea managed to pick themselves up and could end the season on a better note.
When asked about finishing in the top six, Pochettino said it was the club’s aim to end higher and said via BBC:
“It’s really important to finish the way that we are doing now. It is really important for the team, for the players, and for the club to be close to achieving one of our objectives: to play in Europe next season.”
Reflecting on missed opportunities, it’s clear that dropping points in games against Burnley and Sheffield United at home has cost us a higher league position. Indeed, securing victories in those matches would have propelled us into fifth place, enhancing our European qualification prospects.
Nevertheless, despite these setbacks, we can take pride in our strong finish to the season and our assurance of European football for the upcoming campaign. It’s a testament to the team’s resilience and character that we’ve been able to overcome adversity and secure our place among the continent’s elite for next season.
Securing European football would be the next step in our evolution. Doing so given the season we have had will be something to celebrate.
